1. Tell me about your personal journey with yoga. Why is it important to you?

I came to yoga about 7 years ago. It was initially a social workout with my colleagues at lunch time. It soon became much more than that and transformed into a lifestyle. I enjoyed learning the intentions and nuggets our teacher would share during class that would spark a movement within to be better and stronger as an individual. It gave me a drive to be the best version of myself. Now as a teacher I try to give my students those same “aha” moments and give them new motivation to evolve and grow as an individual.

2. When did you first begin teaching yoga? What made you transition into a leadership position?

I began teaching almost 2 years ago. I embarked on the teacher training journey more so for myself than to teach, but quickly began to enjoy the role of teacher. It not only holds me accountable to maintain my practice, but also gives me so much satisfaction to see and hear the progress in my students.

3. What makes your classes unique?

I am fully invested and present in the space with my students and feel the energy I bring really connects to them. The environment in the studio is most important to me. Giving them a safe place to practice, themed with well thought intensions and music to coordinate and tell the story each class.

4. How does music benefit your guidance in a yoga class?

I’ve always been guided by music. I love the sounds and beats and how they take over inside. I spend a lot of time on my playlists crafting them to have the energy that I’m looking for in each class. Whether it be slow and mellow, earthy and grounding, meditative, etc. I feel the music sets the tone and pace and completes the class.

1. Tell me about your personal journey with yoga. What is it important to you?

My journey with yoga began when I was a sophomore in college, 6 years ago. I grew up playing many sports growing up. I played varsity basketball and volleyball for three years in high school so sports and fitness have always played an important part of my growing process. I always remember I was the one who would always make sure we stretched before practice and games. It was Coach Mello in high school who really got me addicted to deep stretching before volleyball. Before practice every day we would do 30 minutes of stretching, core strengthening, and warm ups to get up physically and mentally prepared. Volleyball was the first season, and basketball was the second season, and by the third season we were back playing outdoor club volleyball. It was amazing! The sports high and being in tune with your body with coordination, flexibility, and confidence was amazing, but when college came and I wasn’t playing sports anymore it was much harder to maintain. To be honest I got a little depressed for a while. I missed the full body and mind involvement. I tried forming a volleyball team in college but with all the studying and partying I couldn’t find a consistent team like what I had in high school. People had other things on their agenda and I realized that not many women played sports! It was fun to play with the guys, but there’s nothing like playing with your group of girls. I ended up just going to the gym and lifting weights, when one day my friend asked me if I wanted to go with her to yoga after the gym. I went to SDSU so I would work out at the ARC gym and there was a fitness classroom area in the gym. It was convenient so I agreed, even though I had never tried it before! I figured, how hard can it be? “It’s just stretching” I thought. We went into the class and joined the back row so no one could watch us.

Everything was going fine and dandy until we got to side plank. It was then that my arm started shaking and wobbling, I couldn’t control it! I was determined from that moment on to get the strength I would need to hold side plank. I hardly ever turn down a challenge and the fact that there were some things in class that I couldn’t do, made me want to practice until I could do them flawlessly. Also, during that yoga class I really was surprised by the idea of shavasana. I really knew nothing about yoga and was confused when we were told to just lay there, to let our thoughts come in, recognize them as thoughts and nothing more, and then to let them pass by. I realized at this point I never really stopped. I was always go-go-go growing up. Running around, making friends, playing sports. It was only in my journal that I really took me time, but this new idea of shavasana introduced stillness to my life. It was a weird things to comprehend. You would think that after alive for 20 years you would take a break to meditate. You don’t know until you try, and since then my world started to change. My yoga practice picked up from there. I finally got a yoga mat and slowly transitioned my work out clothes to yoga clothes. I found that I was meeting the same group of girls that I so longed for, and missed from playing sports, to be the girls who showed up on their mat. Yoga started to fill the hole in my heart that was missing since high school. Since then, I feel like I have used my company, Pi Yoga Pants, to leverage this friendship, and give me more excuses to attend yogi social events and to meet more and more like minded people in the community. Whereas before, I would feel somewhat intimidated, I started to feel more and more included, and to be honest like I was the one bringing friends together! I love everything that yoga has brought into my life. The physical strength, the courage to try my first handstand (yes- at age 25!), the mental clarity that I knowingly longed for, the friendship of motivated women, and the community embodying love, acceptance, and personal freedom to be the best version of you.

2. When did you first begin teaching yoga? What made you transition into a leadership position?

I made my transition into a leadership very young. I am the oldest child and always took leadership with my brother and made sure to protect him from anyone that even thought about giving him a hard time. While in high school, I loved being the person on the team to encourage everyone on the court and to take the situation into my own hands. When I turned 19 I started managing my own promotional team of 10 people for SD Social Presents. This was the first real opportunity I had where someone financially entrusted in me to be a leader which gave me confidence that I was on the right path. I loved creating a team, making sure everyone was happy, and getting the job done. When I turned 22 I started managing marketing events for two major nationwide companies, BARetc and GMR Marketing. I was managing up to 5,000 employees nationwide and executed over 3,000 events in less than a year. The leadership role came naturally with empathy and ability to quickly make executive decisions calmly with the most efficient form of action. By the time I turned 25, I began to feel overwhelmed with the corporate world. I thought I could do it all, but in the meantime my personal life and health were quickly getting pushed to the perimeter. I decided to take a breather and departed December of 2015 to travel the world for a year.

After 4 months into my journey my mind was finally still. Bubbles of creativity began to fill the hole that was once was occupied by my corporate life style. I grew this deep desire to finally put my efforts towards something for the greater good and I really wanted to create something that would creative a positive and healthy lifestyle for myself to the point where, when asked what I would do when I retire, I would say, “I’m already doing it”. Similarly, I wanted to bring my friends and family along with me on this journey. I wanted to prove to them that they too, could break free of this corporate world to the point where they wouldn’t dread waking up on Monday, but rather wake up every day excited to put their ideas into action. I wanted them to know that if they have an idea it may actually be a good idea! I wanted to encourage them to put their ideas into action, because believe it or not an idea they, or even you, may have can be successful! A lot of people that I have worked with face this impending fear that if they are the ones to make the decision, it will not be a good outcome. The first decisions in business are the hardest, not because you don’t know which direction to go, but because you are afraid that no matter which direction you go, you are afraid you will fail. I’ve seen it over and over again, and I give these friends patience and encouragement to break this ceiling they have created for themselves. Everyone has ideas and the odds are that if you objectively evaluate your ideas and check the competition you can narrow it down to one idea that really has potential! Trust your instinct! I dare you to try it.

After all that I have learned and experienced, I am humbled to have acquired leadership qualities and am grateful that I can lead by example. I am so proud of all my friends who have started pursuing or better developing their business ideas since I started Pi Yoga Pants. The best part about collaborating and being a team player is helping each other succeed. When we help each other along the way we can ultimately help the community flourish into a better and more successful place for everyone.

Every Tuesday I have events at EVE Encinitas for Inner Temple Tuesday from 10am-6pm. It is a free community event with vendors and wellness practitioners alike to add a little something extra to your Tuesday afternoon vegan lunch.

However, the next BIG event for Pi Yoga Pants is at the San Diego Yoga Festival coming up Friday, January 27 to Monday, January 30, 2017. We will be there all 4 days, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday on the grassy lawn in Ocean Beach right out front of Wonderland and the Ocean Beach Hotel facing the ocean. 1. Tell me about your personal journey with yoga. Why is it important to you?

My yoga journey started when I could no longer run from the feelings I refused to deal with after returning from Baghdad, Iraq. First, I found meditation and then I found yoga as a moving meditation. Yoga allows me to marry my gratitude for movement with my need to let my thoughts escape me. Yoga is important to me because it allows me to find peace in movement. There was a time when I couldn’t move and when I found yoga, I found my ability to calm my anxiety and depression. I literally find peace in each breath.

2. When did you first begin teaching yoga? What made you transition into a leadership position?

I am fairly new to teaching yoga. I began teaching in November of 2016 almost 2 weeks after receiving my 200 hour YTT certificate from Hot Yoga Healthy You. When I decided to enter into Yoga Teacher Training, I did it to deepen my practice. I did not go into YTT thinking I would come out teaching classes, but towards the end of training, I knew teaching was something I really wanted to do in some capacity. I came to a place of understanding exactly what yoga means and does for me. My goal is to share what I get out of my own practice with other people. I find joy in the connections I make with the people who allow me to guide them in their practice.

To know me is to know I do not like my feet off of the ground. I consciously know that I cannot grow unless I push myself. I plan to start breathing through my fears and try new things both on and off my mat. 3. What makes your classes unique?

My classes are unique because of the intention that I bring to each class. I thoroughly bring myself into my classes. I bring my journey, my compassion, my understanding, and my heart into the studio. As I speak to each person, I am also speaking to myself and what is on my heart in those moments in time. I also believe my classes are unique because I am thoroughly aware of the gift in each breath, step, and move that every person takes.

4. How does music benefit your guidance in a yoga class?

Music plays an important role in my classes. I begin my classes with jazz or some type of instrumental music. The sound of saxophones and pianos reminds me of my grandfather and immediately puts me at ease and connects me to who I am outside of the hustle and bustle of the world. Music, the tempo and sometimes the words benefit my guidance in the flow of the class and allow my energy to meet in the right moments during class.

1. Tell me about your personal journey with yoga. Why is it important to you?

My personal journey with yoga began years ago when my friend introduced me to heated vinyasa. It changed my whole perspective on yoga. Recently I decided to honor my desire to become and instructor after I began to heal and recover from some emotional wounds. This journey is important to me because it has given me the self confidence and health I have been craving and seeking my entire life.

I began teaching yoga in May of 2016. Part of what inspired me to take on this leadership position was the ability to share with people my process of healing combined with a physical practice that can bring on a higher self esteem.

My classes are unique because I am unique. My personal history brings about a perspective in my teaching style that is based in recovery, healing, personal growth and challenging the body for my students. I offer a whole mind body experience to my students.

1. Tell me about your personal journey with yoga. Why is it important to you?

I have been practicing yoga for about ten years now, but I still consider myself a beginner. I love yoga because it brings wholeness into our human experience. As we move, we connect with our breath, create space in the body, and a calmness to the mind. It’s a beautiful and accessible practice that has countless benefits. Sharing yoga is important to me because it’s empowering and helps people remember who they really are. Yoga offers a sacred space for self-discovery, healing, and growth. I love that!

2. When did you first begin teaching yoga? What made you transition into a leadership position?

I started teaching yoga asana (postures) about 2.5 years ago. I have taught meditation for close to eight years. I feel very passionate about sharing the things that I love, and so it was a natural evolution for me to begin teaching, as it gave me more opportunities to share my passion and purpose.

3. What makes your classes unique?

My classes are unique in that they emphasize subtle energies such as breath, intuition, and sensation. The movements I guide are done so in a very meditative way. I offer a lot of opportunity for self-inquiry, compassion, and self-care. My intention behind teaching is to offer a sacred space for people to show up exactly as they are, with no expectation or external demands, just space to come home to their true self, so that they can feel more grounded, centered, and whole by the time our class is over.

4. How does music benefit your guidance in a yoga class?

I love adding music to my class that matches the energy and intention for the day. I often have very soothing and healing sounds to help deepen and encourage the class to go inside and listen to what their soul knows to be true. Music adds dimension and depth. I believe in the healing sounds of music and am very mindful of that when choosing the songs that I play.

I have a couple events coming up. The first is a yoga nidra class on Friday, March 17th at 6:30pm at Yoga Liberty in Liberty, MO, and the second is a workshop on Living from the Heart, Saturday, April 8th, 1-4 at Soul Movement Studio in Sioux Falls, SD. 1.) Tell me about your personal journey with yoga. Why is it important to you?

My yoga journey isn’t linear at all. Like my life, my yoga practice has its ups and downs. I started practicing in middle school when my aunt took me to my very first power yoga class. I just thought it was a cool and unique workout, not something I’d commit my life to figuring out. After a long road of pain, hurt, trauma and depression I found my yoga mat again. My yoga practice is sacred and my yoga mat is where I find solace. I know yoga is important to me because it has seriously impacted my life in huge ways: I am able to find comfort and wholeness in my body, I am not so eager to jump to rage, aggression or apprehension as a first response to stress, I am able to love others more and find gratitude in little things, I can release tension that’s been stored in my body for lifetimes or more, my health has improved significantly/I feel strong, and I feel more compassion towards others.

2.) When did you first begin teaching yoga? What made you transition into a leadership position?

I began teaching yoga in Honolulu, Hawaii in September 2015. I chose to become a teacher because I knew that if I could find a safe place to explore my emotions, thoughts, feelings and body and work through all of the self-limiting thoughts I had then I could help others find the same in their bodies and practices. I can be described as an introvert so I spent most of my life fearing the thought of public speaking. At times, when I’m teaching, I have this outer-body experience where I just look at myself guiding students in and out of postures and I’m not even sure it’s really me. Teaching in front of students allowed me to find confidence in speaking up for myself out of the studio space. I found my voice because of teaching and I speak up for what I want.

3.) What makes your classes unique?

Full disclaimer: I’m a goofball. My name literally means “cheerful” or “merry” and I make sure to get at least one person to laugh in my class. I love when students get out of their heads and take themselves/their practice lightly. I offer a lot of layers in more advanced postures because I know not every student is going to be able to lift his/her hips of the ground in Eight-Angle pose (Astavakrasana). I like telling my students that it’s ok to be wherever they are today and I allow my students to find what works best in their bodies and go from that point.

4.) How does music benefit your guidance in a yoga class?

Music is a huge component of class! If I want students to feel a certain emotion, like feel energetic in core then I set the tone with my music choices. Music can get people out of their own heads and into other sensations of the body. Sometimes the song lyrics or sound speak more to my overall theme than my words can express. Music enhances this experience!

1. Tell me about your personal journey with yoga. Why is it important to you?

I have grown in knowledge and compassion, strength in my mind and body, and opened my heart in my years of practicing yoga. Yoga eases any stressors and brings me into a state of peace and contement, and draws me to my mat everyday. This beautiful gift is the reason I teach yoga. I wanted everyone I know and met to know the benefits of yoga.

2. When did you first begin teaching yoga? What made you transition into a leadership position?

I graduated from my first teacher training in 2010, and began teaching in 2014. I wanted to share my experience of yoga to as many people as possible, and to have my students fall in love with yoga the way I have. I didn’t realize that seeing how it has positively affected so many lives made me so much happier than I could imagine. I find teaching yoga even more wonderful than practicing myself.

3. What makes your classes unique?

I connect with students in individual ways and can sense when I may need to change a sequence or take the pace down or up. I have been told that my classes create a calm and peaceful sense.

4. How does music benefit your guidance in a yoga class?

Music most definitely set the pace for a class. From a calm begin to building up to a slightly quicker pace for sun salutes and arm balances, while using a slower pace for seated postures and savasana can help ease students into a peaceful end.

1.) Tell me about your personal journey with yoga. Why is it important to you?

Yoga is important to me for my overall well being. It helps strengthen my mind, body and my soul. I used to experience tremendous lower back pain everyday. Since I started practicing hot yoga on a regular basis, I have not had any low back pain. Every time I leave the studio, I feel happy and strong.

2.) When did you first begin teaching yoga? What made you transition into a leadership position?

I started teaching yoga in July of 2015. It was something that I felt was calling my name. Since I believe in the healing of my practice, I decided I wanted to pass on the beauty of yoga to others as well.

3.) What makes your classes unique?

I feel like my classes are fun. I take pride in providing clear cues to guide my students through their practice safely and effectively. And, I truly believe that the breath of yoga is extremely powerful. I like to show my students, through teaching and breathing that it is an important part to the yoga asanas.

4.) How does music benefit your guidance in a yoga class?

Music is incredibly inspiring. I believe it can be meditative and motivating at the same time. It can also awaken a spiritual sense from within our soul.

5.) Tell me about your next event and where we can follow you online.

My next event is Saturday March 11th at 3pm at CorePower Yoga in Del Mar. I will be co-teaching a C2 Fusion and Flow class which is a combo of Hot Power Fusion and Power Yoga 2 (Vinyasa).

My teaching schedule is as follows:

5Q Interview @Zosolisa, aka Lisa Yeme!

1.) Tell me about your personal journey with yoga. Why is it important to you?

Yoga entered my life about 13 years ago while living in LA. I was pursuing a career in dance when I decided to take a yoga class and it was such a pleasant surprise. I wasn’t used to moving in a room without a mirror and the fact that I could make the practice work for my body and not have to copy a teacher’s exact movement was so liberating! I loved how it made me feel and I signed up for a teacher training right away and upon completion I immediately began teaching. In 2004 I moved to San Diego and for about seven years I just taught yoga on the side while I worked in an office. Over the years life’s difficulties came up as they do for everyone, and I’ve always found my solace in teaching and practicing yoga. In 2013 I completed a 500 hour teacher training with my teachers Raghunath and Sondra Loring at Sadhana Center for Yoga in Hudson, NY. It was truly a transformational experience, we dove deep into the Yoga Sutras and the Bhagavad Gita. We practiced strong vinyasa and chanted, meditated, ate together, hiked, cooked, sang and cried together. We practiced Bhakti yoga – being completely in service to others around you, devoting yourself to something bigger than you. I made some strong bond with my yogi friends and teachers and they helped push me to where I am today. At the start of 2014 I stopped working in an office and began teaching yoga full time. I’ll never forget the moment I drove out of the parking garage for the final time, walking away from 10 years in a cubicle. I laugh cried! I was so overjoyed, excited and scared about taking the jump but I haven’t had a single regret since. I am fascinated with the wide range of people I encounter regularly. Every single day is different and I’m constantly challenged in a way that keeps me excited to learn more. I can tap into my creative side putting class sequences together and making playlists. I get to be a part of a community that is pursuing peace, happiness and health. I learn people’s amazing stories of their tragedies and triumphs and I get the privilege to witness their growth over time. And I continue to grow and heal being a part of it all. Everything I ever share in class is something I’m personally studying or practicing myself. They say if you want to learn – teach. And that is my passion. To serve, to love, and to give.

2.) When did you first begin teaching yoga? What made you transition into a leadership position?

I began teaching yoga in 2005 when I was actually quite new to the practice itself. I had already been teaching dance for a few years at the time so it wasn’t hard to teach the physical movement. But it took several years to be ready to study the philosophy and anatomy deeper. I started teaching for CorePower Yoga in 2012 and I’ve learned so much from being a part of this community. I’ve been involved with coaching teacher training since 2014 and I’m so grateful for the experiences I’ve had. Teacher training is a journey, it’s an opportunity to help people break past the barriers they’ve created for themselves and it’s always special and life changing. I certainly never imagined my life would take this direction but I’m so grateful and humbled to get to share something I love so much on a daily basis. I hope to continue to push myself to grow in my own practice and studies so that I may keep sharing what I learn along the way!

3.) What makes your classes unique?

I find every single class unique. Every teacher has something to share, every teacher is a mirror and my contribution is a small piece to the huge yoga puzzle out there. I am only a messenger. I always have a purpose when I teach, I want to share what I’m working on because I am a forever student. Because of my dance background I love to create interesting sequences that feel good in the body. I want my students to feel challenged and empowered. I love music so that is an important element in my classes, I give my class playlists a lot of attention. I am always creating new playlists and seeking out new music. I follow the path of the moon and astrology and often share my findings, I share quotes from books I’m reading, and I offer insight on deeper yoga concepts from the ancient texts. The amazing thing about yoga is it is so vast, there is never a shortage of information to share. It keeps me very engaged and allows me to plant seeds of inspiration in my students.

4.) How does music benefit your guidance in a yoga class?

All my life I’ve had a deep appreciation for music. I grew up listening to classic rock and Motown, I love the legends. I also grew up outside of Seattle during the grunge era and so I have a special place in my heart for moody rock and roll. I love jazz, blues, hip hop and electronica. Music can change the vibe and experience and help students turn off and tune in. One of the hardest aspects of yoga is staying present, it’s a constant struggle. I see students react and go deeper into the meditation of their practice when they’re enjoying the music. I have a great respect for practicing in silence as well, I know there is an important time and place for that. But I also know that music is such a part of my personality that I teach even more from the heart when I’m connected to the music that’s playing.

Tell me about your personal journey with yoga. Why is it important to you?

Interestingly, I didn’t think I liked yoga. I tried a class or two 10+ years ago and didn’t feel like it did anything for me. When I discovered a heated yoga class, at a friend’s recommendation, the world of yoga opened up within me. There was something so deep and meditative about the heated climate; an exercise of the mind as well as the body. I was absolutely hooked by my 5th class and knew I would open a studio in my town. I wanted to invite my friends and neighbors to explore the healing and meditative qualities of hot yoga & all the amazing benefits.

Tell us about Hot Yoga Healthy You:

HYHY is nestled on the edge of RedHawk in South Temecula; in the south west corner of the Stater Bros shopping center on Temecula Parkway. An easy landmark is Temecula Valley Hospital as we are directly one block south of the hospital. We have a generous parking lot with easy access for the handicapped.

Our studio is warm and inviting with a single yoga room with a custom padded floor. Our classes are 98 degrees and 40% humidity (Sculpt is 94 degrees & no added humidity). We honor silence in the yoga room before and after class and invite you to arrive early to utilize this energetic space to meditate or just relax.

Our mission is to empower individuals to expand their lives mentally and physically through yoga. It brings joy to our hearts to help others live a healthy, joyful and abundant life. HYHY offers a safe haven and opportunity for self discovery to those we serve, our instructor and our community.
