From my wild college days of flipping my hair on the dance floor to today where ecstatic dance and soul music are my nutrients, music has always been a catalyst in my life for healing and activating. In my teenage and college years it was abused as a seeking agent, layered on top of a vodka soda and a caged heart, as a desperate attempt to feel alive. After years of soul journeying and allowing myself to finally feel, sound has become a gift from the Gods allowing me to connect deeper to my heart and my true self as unconditional love.
So what is sound and why is it so powerful?
Sound is vibrations that travel, the movement of energy, a pressure wave, a connector. Sound is our connection to our hearts, the hearts around us and to the frequency of unconditional love. It has the ability to connect us inward and outward in all directions: inward to ourselves, outward to others, up to the cosmos and down to Mother Earth.
In our own hearts, sound has the power to heal, transform and transmute. It can alter our heart quicker than any other medium available. Within seconds music can create an emotion, trigger a memory, a mood, or cultivate a deep passion. It has the power to change our heart’s direction and focus with just a few simple chords.
For a recovering addict of mind masturbation, allowing my brain to silence in order to reach my heart is a necessary dance and how I get there is through music. Put on a soundtrack, my favorite is DTO’s Nameless Energy, and boom I’m transported back into my heart. From here my vibration is raised and I’m able to travel to higher frequencies. Within moments of playing, serenity takes over. DTO’s yoga/meditation album has a sole intention to inspire, uplift and connect us with our hearts. Every time without fail, no matter where I am before playing, I am transported into my heart.
In order to take the spiritual temperature of an individual or a society, one must mark the music … Musical innovation is full of danger to the State for when modes of music change, the laws of the State change with them. Music is a moral law … Let me control the music for one generation and I will control Rome … Show me who writes a nation’s songs and I care not who writes its laws … Music and rhythm find their way into the secret places of the soul.
Sound connects our hearts to our subconscious and to other dimensions: Rather than pervading through our conscious thoughts, music penetrates directly into our hearts without a second of thought. Our human response to music is involuntary. It is a direct doorway into our subconscious mind.
Sound or vibration is the most powerful force in the universe. Music is a divine art, to be used not only for pleasure but as a path to God-realization. Vibrations resulting from devotional singing lead to attunement with the Cosmic Vibration or the Word (John 1:1).
Music is the medicine of the heart. It connects us to ourselves, others, and to God. It plays at all times, through the voices in our head, our words spoken or not spoken to others, up to the divine and down to Mother Earth. The soundtrack is always playing. It is our choice what song we play. What will yours be and how will you get there?
