As a musician, I have always loved how music encourages the body to move. It wasn’t until Bhaktifest 2013 that I profoundly realized music could also have an extraordinary impact on my yoga practice. Yoga + Live Music is blossoming in classes, festivals, and events globally. As a musician and a yogi, I fully love this experience on the mat or behind the piano performing for you.
1. Setting the tone
As a yogi, listening to live music helps create a fresh ambience to inspire the practice. Music helps lift students during challenging sequences with upbeat music as well as creating a restorative vibe with calming music. A sensitive musician will truly make a difference in creating the perfect atmosphere for a class.
2. Being in the flow
Instructors have additional freedom to modify a class when there is a live musician following their guidance, e.i. wanting to stop and explain a pose to the student means the musician plays softer to accommodate the moment. Student learning increases when the message is able to be clearly communicated.
3. Going deeper
Listening to a live musician increases sensitivity to your own gifts. Like yogis, musicians practice for years to deepen their abilities. A daily practice means experiencing ups and downs of life and learning to accept ourselves for where we are and what we’re working toward. Listening to live music is a great reminder of the mantra practice, practice, practice…all is coming.
4. Being with community
Being a yogi provides a connection to self as well as a global movement of world peace. Attending a yoga class with local musicians is a unique opportunity to meet new people, rejuvenate the soul, and be inspired throughout the experience and off the mat. We are in this together!
5. Supporting local and global artists
The more live music offered in yoga classes, the more possibilities there shall be for yogi musicians to perform and make a living. Life-enhancing music that awakens and heals
is here for all to enjoy with your support! Thank you! Yes!
