5 questions with @alayalejandro
1.) Tell me about your personal journey with yoga. Why is it important to you?
I was a competitive dancer growing up, but chose to not continue after the end of high school. A year and a half later, I discovered yoga and got hooked on a daily practice almost right away. I was amazed at all of the benefits yoga yielded me, not only for my body but for my spiritual and emotional well being. Since practicing yoga I have become more present, grounded, lighter, healthier, and less consumed with whatever doesn’t serve my higher self.
2.) When did you first begin teaching yoga? What made you transition into a leadership position?
I began teaching yoga sculpt in October 2015 after completing Power Yoga Teacher Training and Yoga Sculpt Teacher training during that year. I never considered myself “fit” for being a yoga sculpt instructor, (since I could barely make it through a yoga sculpt class) but my mentors believed differently. And they were right. This new experience has given me an amazing opportunity to grow stronger not only as an instructor but as a yogi, and has provided me the best outlet to share what I am so very passionate about.
3.) What makes your classes unique?
I strive to keep my connection with students authentic; I act the same way behind the desk as I do in the studio, which I think people appreciate. When I plan my yoga classes, I place myself in the mindset of a student and incorporate the type of music and postures that I would be motivated by if I were taking class rather than guiding it. I try my best to keep the mood light and happy, so most of my instructions are said with a smile on my face.
4.) How does music benefit your guidance in a yoga class?
Music is my FAVORITE element of a yoga class! It certainly helps set the energy of the class, as well as offer students a mindful distraction from challenging postures. I love playing music that is not on the radio because it gives students space to have a fresh and present experience on their mats!
5.) Tell me about your next event and where we can follow you online.
On Sunday July 24th, I will be guiding my 12pm Yoga Sculpt class at Corepower Encinitas with DTO playing a live dj set! I am looking forward to an amazing class with a room packed full of inspiring yogis…I hope to see you there! Follow me on Instagram @alayalejandro or on Facebook- Alessandra Sorrentino.
