5Q Interview with Tatiana @tiana.yoga

1. Tell me about your personal journey with yoga. Why is it important to you?

I was practicing Ashtanga yoga during a complicated period in my private life. At this time yoga brought so much peace and order in my life that I decided to bring it to the next level so that I could share it with other people and make them discover all the benefits I have experienced. Thus, I signed up for a teacher training in Paris while still keeping my office job. Once I have finished the training, I finally decided to quit my job, to travel and work as a yoga teacher. I have chosen to go to another part of the world, without knowing the language of the country. With a lot of good will and ready for anything, I arrived in… Costa Rica! 

2. When did you first begin teaching yoga? What made you transition into a leadership position?

I’ve decided to become a retreat leader and organiser after following myself Ashtanga yoga teacher training in Costa Rica with Ron Reid (one of the first Canadian teachers to be authorised by Pattabhi Jois) and Marla Meenakshi Joy (teaching in teacher training programs across Canada, the U.S., Europe and Asia). The first training I took with Ron & Marla allowed me to really deepen my practice. Last year I was honoured to organise the intensive 100hr training (part of 300hr program) for Marla and Ron in Playa Guiones where I live now, which was one of the most amazing experiences. I’m super excited about this year training: in addition to be led by the 2 most experienced yoga teachers I know, it is going to take place in a beautiful new boutique hotel up the hill with breathtaking ocean and jungle views, and the rooftop yoga studio from where you can see the sunset and eagles flying around you while you practice!

3. What makes your classes unique?

« Practice and all is coming » – Patthabi Jois, the founder of Ashtanga yoga kept saying this to his students and I can’t agree more. First, yoga for me was merely a set of asanas that made me feel better physically, just a fitness for my body. When I started to dig deeper in 8 limbs of Ashtanga yoga, I have realised that a lot of its fundamental concepts if followed can literally change your life. Practicing yoga every day allows me to teach my students directly from my experience and it’s the best way I know to pass my knowledge and passion for yoga.

4. How does music benefit your guidance in a yoga class?

I lead different kind of classes: dynamic yoga, slow flow, aerial yoga, restorative. For each kind of a class I have a dedicated Spotify playlist that rounds up my classes perfectly. The music helps a lot to install the right mood for the class and keep my students concentrated on the practice as well as even timing my classes.
